In their book No Single Sparrow Makes a Summer, nine young women richly document cultural and geographic communities of South Louisville from the inside. Collectively, the authors speak nine languages and have lived in seven countries ranging from Kenya to Iraq to Cuba to Pakistan. They've written about the ravages of war, life before and after moving to Louisville as refugees and immigrants, misperceptions of their neighborhoods, experiences in the foster care and juvenile detention systems, the joys and stresses of motherhood, and many other challenges and triumphs. Alongside their stories are oral histories culled from interviews they conducted with their family members, neighbors, and other community members. Taken collectively, these diverse, compelling, skillfully-crafted narratives provide unforgettable insights into the vividness of lives in communities in Louisville that have not heretofore been documented.
This book is the culmination of an intensive partnership between the Louisville Story Program and Iroquois High School.
