The Defender: Special Edition of Louisville Magazine

Lou Mag Cover

Forty years ago, the family of Frank Stanley, Sr., longtime owner and editor of the Louisville Defender newspaper, donated his papers to the University of Louisville Archives. Included in the collection were almost 17,000 photographs from the Defender, the most significant Black newspaper in Kentucky.

We are honored to guest-edit a special edition of Louisville Magazine and to share the powerful photographic collection of the Louisville Defender.

The Louisville Story Program has partnered with the University of Louisville Archives to digitize that collection of photographs, and UofL will eventually make them available on their digital archive, dramatically increasing public access to these cultural treasures. This year, LSP was honored to guest-edit a special issue of Louisville Magazine that shares a selection of these photographs and honors the legacy of the Defender on the eve of its 90th birthday.

Issues of the magazine are available for purchase at Carmichael's Bookstore and select Kroger, Walgreens, and Meijer stores in Louisville. You can order a copy online at our shop.
